The above building was built in 1895. Interestingly, an early American occupant of it was Evelyn Walsh McLean, a Washington socialite who at one time owned both the Hope Diamond and Washington Post. In the 1950s this building was purchased by the Soviet Government, who used it as a school for children of the embassy.
